FMCBCP is a stupid acronym I just came up with. When it’s not football season, we do a FWP (Fearless Weekend Predictions) post every Friday where one of us predicts what will transpire over the upcoming sports weekend. Well, College Basketball is about to start so we needed to do FMCBCP (Fearless Men’s College Basketball Conference Predictions) to document all our picks for the 2008-09 season. I wanted to do a post that would feature a comprehensive coverage of all the conferences together. EDay then reminded me that might be a 25,000 word post. Since most of our readers (and contributors for that matter) have the attention span of a three year-old monkey, we decided to break each down by conference. We’re only doing major conferences, so don’t whine when you don’t see the MEAC being featured. We’ll be picking conference winners, POYs, COYs, FOYs, biggest disappointments and number of tournament teams. As always, this will be done in a way that only APIAS.net can.
Today, the Big East…
Big East Champion
Bru’s Pick: Louisville
TGC’s Pick: Louisville; As I notated prior to the Cards’ dismantling of the Volunteers, Earl Clark is the real deal.
Smoothron’s Pick: UConn; They have good guards and probably the best true center in the country. Add that to the fact that Calhoun may be the best coach in the country and this is a done deal.
More winners after the jump.
Big East Player of the Year
Bru’s Pick: Sam Young
TGC’s Pick: Eric Devendorf; You’ll hear a lot of Harangody and Thabeet in this discussion, I imagine, but I’m going a little further north for a real game changer I expect to have a fantastic season leading his talented new guards.
Smoothron’s Pick: Jeff Adrien; He is the perfect complement to Thabeet and the two of them could both get double-digit rebounds a game. Adrien will benefit off Thabeet’s post presence and should be able to score at will.
Big East Coach of the Year
Bru’s Pick: John Thompson III
TGC’s Pick: Jim Boeheim; Look for an improved defense, and a weaker middle-to-bottom-half of the conference to knock ‘Cuse back into the title mix. Last year’s 19-12 mark will be quickly forgotten as the Orange rally for a 4 seed at 23-8.
Smoothron’s Pick: Bob Huggins; Whether he’s been boozing or not, Huggins is a damn good coach. He brings in a talented freshman class, but doesn’t have quite the expectations of Louisville or UConn.
Big East Freshman of the Year
Bru’s Pick: Samardo Samuels
TGC’s Pick: Samardo Samuels; Besides having a name that will look good on the trophy, he’ll have plenty of time to get up to speed before conference season, which is bad news for the Harangody and the rest of the league.
Smoothron’s Pick: Samardo Samuels; The term ‘beast’ applies in every sense for Samuels. He is huge, a defensive stopper and unstoppable from ten feet and in. It will be an absolute shock if he doesn’t win this award.
Big East Disappointment of the Year
Bru’s Pick: Hasheem Thabeet
TGC’s Pick: Georgetown; Every year they start out in the top 4, and most years they win several big in-season games before falling (what I assume has to be) well short of expectations come tourney time. This year IS the exception. They’ll fall short in the regular season to the tune of 9-9 in conference and an NIT bid.
Smoothron’s Pick: People will actually pay to watch South Florida play Rutgers. They will be extremely disappointed.
Number of Big East teams in NCAA Tournament
Bru’s Pick: 9 (Lou, Gtown, UConn, Pitt, Marq, ND, Syr, Nova, WVU)
TGC’s Pick: 7; The Ville, West Virginia, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Marquette, UConn, Pitt
Smoothron’s Pick: 8; UConn, Louisville, West Virginia, Georgetown, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame
Lots of disagreement while picking the Big East. I guess when your basketball conference has 68 teams in, that will happen. Not sure what happened to EDay this go around, maybe he was stunned by the fact that Khalid El-Amin wasn’t playing for UConn anymore. If Samardo Samuels doesn’t win Freshman of the Year, then Tiger Woods didn’t win two majors this year… oh, wait! Tomorrow we return with the Big Ten.
