FMCBCP is a stupid acronym I just came up with. When it’s not football season, we do a FWP (Fearless Weekend Predictions) post every Friday where one of us predicts what will transpire over the upcoming sports weekend. Well, College Basketball is about to start so we needed to do FMCBCP (Fearless Men’s College Basketball Conference Predictions) to document all our picks for the 2008-09 season. I wanted to do a post that would feature a comprehensive coverage of all the conferences together. EDay then reminded me that might be a 25,000 word post. Since most of our readers (and contributors for that matter) have the attention span of a three year-old monkey, we decided to break each down by conference. We’re only doing major conferences, so don’t whine when you don’t see the MEAC being featured. We’ll be picking conference winners, POYs, COYs, FOYs, biggest disappointments and number of tournament teams. As always, this will be done in a way that only APIAS.net can.
Today, the ACC…
Bru’s Pick: North Carolina
TGC’s Pick: North Carolina; Simply the best talent in the league, won’t be challenged. Duke is rebuilding(for Duke) and no one else can compete. Don’t bring that Wake shit in here, more on that later.
EDay’s Pick: North Carolina; Look, I’m going to go out on a limb here with my Championship pick. They may not have the most talent or much experience, but I like their coach and I’m going to go with the North Carolina Tar Heels to win the league this year.
Smoothron’s Pick: North Carolina; Unless you are a fan of another team (and really if you are) there is no excuse for picking another team to win the ACC.
More prognosticating after the jump.
ACC Player of the Year
Bru’s Pick: Tyler Hansbrough
TGC’s Pick: Ty Lawson; After leading the conference in assist/turnover ratio last year, look for his scoring to improve this season as he advances his lottery selection into the top 10.
EDay’s Pick: Julius Hodge; My pick for player of the year can flat out ball, and he’s a wily vet of the league too. My man, the 9th year starter out of NC St., Julius Hodge will without a doubt be the consensus pick for POY in the ACC.
Smoothron’s Pick: Ty Lawson; Hansbrough will have too many expectations to live up to. Lawson is the fastest player in the country and will make Greg Paulus his bitch once again.
ACC Coach of the Year
Bru’s Pick: Dino Gaudio
TGC’s Pick: Mike KScqfa7^2ski; Because if you don’t vote for him, you hate America.
EDay’s Pick: Tough call here but give me Dave Odom.
Smoothron’s Pick: Roy Williams; If you lead a team to an undefeated season in the ACC, which Roy will do, you deserve to win this award.
ACC Freshman of the Year
Bru’s Pick: Al-Farouq Aminu
TGC’s Pick: Al-Farouq Aminu; Come January, it’s too cold to play outside with BB Guns anyway. He’ll probably fill that time with elbows to Hansbrough’s nose and slashing dunks like this one.
EDay’s Pick: Tim Duncan; I tell you what, this kid won’t impress anyone with thunder dunks and blocks into the 5th row, but if you want a stat sheet stuffer you want a young guy like Tim Duncan on your team. He’s the reason Odom will look brilliant this year.
Smoothron’s Pick: Al-Farouq Aminu; He could definitely have a Beasley-like effect on the Deacs this year.
ACC Disappointment of the Year
Bru’s Pick: Brandon Costner
TGC’s Pick: James Johnson; I don’t care how much you guys try to tell me Johnson and Wake Forest are the real deal this year, I don’t buy it. Not for one second.
EDay’s Pick: The ACC in its self is a disappointment (hey rim shot!). But seriously, I look to see Duke go roughly 3-29 on the year. Hey, a guy can dream can’t he?
Smoothron’s Pick: I have a two-way tie for first; 1) Greg Paulus is still playing the league, 2) Every screen shot of Duke females in the stands is always a disappointment. Seriously, there’s no makeup in Durham?
Number of NCAA Tournament Teams from the ACC
Bru’s Pick: 6; (UNC, Duke, Miami, Clemson, Wake, Va Tech)
TGC’s Pick: 5; UNC, Clemson, Duke, Miami, Florida State (yeah, I said Leonard Hamilton–watch his recruiting prowess finally turn into wins)
EDay’s Pick: Hmm, this is probably the most difficult decision of all. I’ll put it at 7. I wanted to say 6 but even with the 3-29 year Coach K’s Duke team will get in as a 7 seed in Kentucky’s bracket.
Smoothron’s Pick: 6; UNC, Duke, Wake, Florida St, Clemson, Virginia Tech
It appears that UNC should dominate the conference and they will probably have (at least) the two best players in the league on their squad. Al-Farouq Aminu should walk away with a nice parting gift for his only season in Winston-Salem. Bru and I are sold on Wake, TGC is not and EDay thinks it’s 1997. We’ll be back tomorrow with the Big East.
