This question manifested itself during Monday’s first Tennessee Baseketball exhibition game (aired over the internets at UTSports.com) as Eday and I sat and watched both the Cats and Vols get their respective “seasons” underway.
Who’s this little white kid, with last year’s model jersey on, playing backup point guard (about 10 minutes worth) who’s not listed on the UT sports website roster, and who Bob Kessling seems resigned not to discuss? Who is this guy?
Well, he’s Mike Hubert. He’s the walk-on PG plucked out of the UT student population to replace academically ineligible backup PG Daniel West, and injured sometimes PG J.P. Prince.
He’s now on the roster (though not in the team pic). And hopefully Adidas has, by now, shipped his very own 2009 basketball uni to Knoxville.
Bruce explained the situation this week:
“Believe it or not, he got cut a couple of years ago by Chattanooga. He wasn’t good enough to walk on at Chattanooga, but he was good enough to be in my backcourt.
You don’t normally go six-deep with 13 scholarships, But Mike did a terrific job, he got 10 minutes, didn’t turn the ball over and kept us in the game.’’
He impressed Pearl so much in the 2 weeks of practice since the squad held open point guard tryouts, Pearl even bothered to learn his first name. He’d been calling him “Mark” until Monday.
Next Saturday Mark… err… Mike might actually get some D1 action in the Vols’ first real game, against–you guessed it–Chattanooga.
