Thought we’d take advantage of the off day to catch up on recent events. After dropping 2 of 3 to the Diamonbacks the A’s rebounded to take the series against the Fish 2 out of 3. The story, as all year, was pitching. Big UK Joe did blow up against the DBacks, but that’s not ever out of the question. Casilla was roughed up in his first appearance back from the DL, but he’ll find his stride.
The rookie Carlos Gonzalez continues to swing the bat pretty well and the rest of the lineup has been doing their jobs. The big surprise for me has been Ryan Sweeney. That young kid is hitting the ball hard, even when he gets out. A .292 average is nothing to sneeze at for an Oakland player as he’s still walking at a rate of about 10% of his at bats. Jack Cust continues to carry an OBP over .400 despite the under .250 average. We’ll take it.
Two more interleague matchups this week with the Phils and the Giants again. I’m guessing the Bay Area rivals will have something for us this time out so we need to snag a couple from the Phillies at home. The Angels continue to dominate, leaving us 4 and a half back of the division. At this point you almost start looking to the wild card (3 games back of the Rays right now). Then again, it’s still the first half. Billy could work his magic some time soon or the Angels could cool off. Lord knows their stats don’t support that bloated record (pitching notwithstanding).
In Exodus news, we’ll be updating only once to twice per week. The posts on this site are starting to warm up again and we have a possible 5th contributor coming on board soon. I love posting the Exodus nearly ever day but we’re not going to let it dominate the site. We’ll leave that up to the heavy hitters over at Athletics Nation. It’s heating up in the Bay area, and in the South East too. Spend as much time watching baseball and laying by the pool as possible friends. Maybe one day we can do both. Until then, enjoy the games, enjoy some brews, and most importantly, if you know a place where TGC can buy a 10 foot pool table e-mail me pronto.
