Well, $90 later and hats for the Sac-Town River Cats, Midland Rockhounds, and Kane County Cougars are en route to APIAS National Headquarters. Let’s face it, no one in their right mind will be comfortable wearing an Oakland A’s hat next year. Not because they’ll lose 100 games next year. Not because no one will notice that attendance drops again. It’s because no A’s fan will know the team that steps on the field next April.
Beane has been unloading since last year. Milton Bradley, Jason Kendall, Bobby Kielty, Esteban Loaiza, and Marco Scutaro are all big names that left the A’s last year. Some of those names may not be so big on the national stage, but I don’t know a single A’s fan that was happy to lose Scutaro’s utility abilities. Happy for him, that he could possible get a full-time job somewhere some time, but definitely not happy for the team’s interests.
Now, in the last month Billy Beane has traded off both his best starting pitcher (ace of the staff) and the best outfielder in his lineup. What did he get in return? 9 prospects, two of which may actually end up on the opening day roster. Looks pretty bleak going into next year for A’s fans.
“I don’t think it’s unfair to say that at all,” Beane said. “I don’t think there’s any reason to dance around the subject. I think it’s something we need to do.”
That’s Billy Boy’s thoughts on the subject. Who knows, maybe the man is a genius. Then again, maybe he just mortgaged the farm one too many times (what’s he up to, his 7th now?) All I know from an A’s fan perspective is that it will be several years before we’re contending for a spot in the AL playoffs again.
Guess that means A’s merch will be cheap after the next couple of years. At least we’ve got that goin’ for us. Oh, and maybe we can defend that Pacific Coast League title the organization worked so hard for this year. That’d be pretty sweet, a screen-print, back-to-back champs PCL T-shirt. What do you all think?
Also, no way anyone would order a Stockton jersey. The “Ports” has to be the dumbest mascot name ever.
